 Beach Kindergarten Purpose

The Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guidelines are the framework that we utilize for our learning and assessment, the way in which we believe our children learn best is very much grounded in the community in which we live.  Children, through their play, connect to the environment they are in, we have identified that many of the children who attend our kindy do not have the opportunity to experience our Beach surrounds due to a number of reasons social, economic and cultural.

We are hoping to see the direct link to more collaborative learning that can take place within nature, for our children to link to ownership of the place/land and to become more self-sufficient in their play whilst having the opportunity to extend their sense of risk and to assess that risk through experience and competence.  To assess how this impacts upon children and their learning once they are back into a classroom setting, that the ‘beach’ or ‘forest’ experiences shape the ability to problem solve in real world situations and allow children to develop a stronger sense of self and take more risks in their learning in the classroom.

It needs to be understood the beach kindy concept is not simply about relocating the kindy to the beach, nor is this a commercial enterprise, this is seen as an excursion with our kindergarten children.   The beach environment and resources will become the resources that the kindy children will use to engage their learning in a similar way to which the forest kindies are doing with our European partners.

Impacts on both Nature and Community within the area

As there have been two sites nominated for use, namely (1) Esa Park and (2) Gatakers the following impacts are based only on these two sites.

One of the elements on this form of excursion/learning opportunity is that the footprint that we all leave on this area is minimized as much as possible.  To ensure that this takes place there will be much discussion with families and children regarding the foods that we take for consumption and following through with our current practice of ‘nude foods’.  Ensuring that all food scraps are taken back for our own re-cycling that we do at kindy and any food wrappers are taken with the children to be disposed of at home.  Additionally this will continue to be a topic of conversation and learning that we will engage in alongside some of our partners in this project including, Ranger Jenna, Reef Check and ACECQA.

As there is already a serviced toilet block in both sites kindy will supply our own toilet paper if needed as well as hand sanitizers which will again be taken back with us for disposal.  Running water is available however each child will also bring along their own drink bottle, as they do at kindy, along with us providing an additional 10L container of water of consumption.

Our project partners will also be engaged with us to learn more fully regarding the environment that we are using and as such the impact that our presence can have, especially in relation to the flora and fauna of the area.  Through this knowledge and hopefully our partnership with council we can build a knowledge base that the children are fully engaged with, which means they take ownership of how they use the spaces, we are visiting.  One of the responsibilities of the Teachers is to engage and be aware of this and ensure that children and families are treating this space with the respect and understanding it deserves.

Operation of Program

Beginning in Term Four of 2014 as the pilot for the project start date is Tuesday 7th Oct.

As we have six classes within the kindergarten all of whom commence and finish at different times the schedule will be as follows;

On Monday 20th Oct/3rd Nov/17th Nov/1st Dec

Starfish & Seahorse

On Tuesday 7th Oct/21st Oct/4th Nov/18th Nov/2nd Dec

Dolphin & Seahorse

On Friday 10th Oct/25th Oct/7th Nov/21st Nov/5th Dec

 Starfish & Dolphin

Use of Space

As discussed previously the two sites being considered for the excursions, Esa Park and Gatakers Bay.  There will be no additional structures taken along apart from the loose parts that have already been mentioned;

 Water/First Aid Kit/lunch boxes & drink bottles/phones/additional changes of clothes for all concerned/tarps to go around existing shade structures in case of strong rain or wind will be taken.

Engagement with the local community will be an essential element to the learning, children observing and engaging in dialogue with other users of the space will shape understanding and collaboration which will enhance the outcomes for all concerned.

Research

Members of the USQ community will be engaging in our research that will work alongside this project; we are utilizing an Action Research Framework as well as having an Education Student completing her Honors program based on this research.  For the purpose of the research we are looking at how the environment shapes the learning outcomes from the Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guidelines.

Training and Communication with Families

We have scheduled in some formal training in Nature Based Learning with Nicki Buchan from Inspired EC, this will take place on Friday the 6th Sept for Families and the a full day session for all Teachers on Saturday 7th Sept.

We will also be hosting some in-house sessions for our families on Tuesday 19th Aug and Thursday 21st Aug.

These workshops will give all parties the opportunity to ask questions, to be involved in the actioning of plans and to also have the chance to share their feelings and perspectives on the project.  It also allows all parties to share their knowledge and their aspirations for the project and to be very clear of responsibilities associated with such a project.

Insurance

As a Kindergarten we already carry insurance worth 20 million and this covers all our staff, children and volunteers when going on excursions.  A copy of which has already been supplied to council.

Should you require any further information please do hesitate to contact myself at the kindergarten.  As the only kindergarten service within the region to be rated as ‘Excellent’ under the National Quality Framework we will celebrate the possibilities of early Childhood Education and would hope to see Fraser Coast Regional Council join with us in achieving this.
